About Awakening The Scientist:
In order to kindle the enthusiasm and scientific spirit among the First-year students, ‘Awakening the Scientist’ is conducted every year at VESIT, an initiative by the Department of Humanities and Applied Sciences. The participating teams had to give a powerpoint presentation on any Electronic/Non-Electronic gadget of their choice, where they had to explain the technical details and the science behind the working of that gadget, following which they were quizzed in detail by various faculty members. This helps to deepen the thinking and conceptual, as well as technical understanding of the product.

Participants: First Year Engineering students

Nineteen teams participated in the first round, of which eight groups qualified for the final round. Each group identified the basic engineering and technology used in the gadget of their choice. The groups gave power point presentations to explain the technical details in the working of the gadget by relating to the past, present and future of the technology used. The students are judged based on the level of creativity and the delivery of their thought process.

The final round of the competition was judged by Mr. A. Nagananda, Dr. Nadir N. Charniya, Dr. Rajani Mangla and Mrs. Kadambari Sharma

As per guidelines by AICTE in revised syllabus induction program is introduced for first year Engineering students. VESIT firmly believes in inculcating and nurturing good values in its students so that they will not only become successful engineers but also responsible members of the society and nation. Continuing with the institution’s legacy and guidelines by AICTE, an Induction Programme was organized exclusively for the first year students from 1 to 10 August 2019. The essence of this Induction programme was to make the students acclimatise with the college environment fast, familiarise and instil the beliefs and culture of the organization in them and help them to build stronger connections and relationships with other students and teachers.

The primary objective is to inculcate and understand the essential complementarity between 'VALUES' and 'SKILLS' to ensure sustained happiness and prosperity which are the core aspirations of all human beings. The main highlights of plausible implications of such a holistic understanding in terms of ethical human conduct, trustful and mutually fulfilling human behavior and mutually enriching interaction with Nature. Outcomes of this self confidence and establish positive acquaintance with their peers, faculties, and institute.

The Primary activities of Induction Programme
Activities included in the induction programme are orientation for Students and Parents, Universal Human Values (UHV) , a diagnostic test, proficiency modules, sahaja yoga session, physical activity, literary activity, mentor mentee system, motivational lectures, familiarization with institute and department, extra-curricular activity, creative arts. Prominent faculties of the college made this event more inspirational which led to healthy interaction.

Orientation for Students and Parents:
The induction program was inaugurated with an orientation session by Mr. Vivek Umrikar, HOD, Humanities and Applied Sciences for all the students and their parents It was followed by sessions taken by each department for the students of their respective branches where they shared their departmental activities and scopes.

Universal Human Values
A sincere effort was being made by our assiduous faculty to bring a positive change in this direction by conducting various mind boggling lectures using elicitive methodology to initiate discussions around human values of compassion, empathy, kindness, patience, tolerance and forgiveness.

A Diagnostic Test
A diagnostic test was conducted for all the students who had scored less than eighty percentile in their qualifying examination. However, the students were pre- informed that the test would not affect their grades, branch change or any aspect of their admission, placements, study etc. The main objective for conducting this test was to help the students who need special attention in specific subjects.

Proficiency Modules
The time during the induction programme was also fruitfully used to revise and clear the basics of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanics and BEE . Proficiency Module lectures on each subject were also conducted for the smooth understanding of topics once the regular curriculum commenced.

Familiarization with Institute and Department
The students were also acquainted with the staff and the labs of their respective departments. A presentation including the respective department’s achievement, lab, staff and placement details were presented and discussed among students.

Mentor Mentee system
Mentoring and connecting the students with faculty is the most important part of student induction. As per the AICTE-UGC guidelines, mentoring process is carried out from first year itself which will be continued during the whole engineering period.

Motivational Lectures

Eminent people from all walks of life were invited to deliver lectures to ignite the spark of motivation and inspiration in the young minds. Institute’s very own counselling body VESLARC had conducted the motivational lecture on “Stress Management on day to day life”.

Literary Activities
The VESLit Literary Circle has also conducted various literary activities to sharpen their soft skills which includes activities like Debate division, Quiz division etc.

Sahaj Yoga Session
Sahaj Yoga session was conducted exclusively for first year students where they were taught relaxation techniques to maintain their day to day stress.

Physical Activity and Extra curricular activities
For honing overall personalities of the students,mostly student driven activities organized by student councils and clubs. To make our students physically fit various sports activities were conducted by the Sports Council of the College. The freshers were also acquainted with how they can participate in all the extra-curricular activities going on in the college under the guidance of faculty advisors. Students have given free play to their creativity in Rangoli Competition and musical extravaganza organized by cultural and music council respectively.

Creative Arts
To enhance students cognitive and creative thinking various activities were conducted where they enthusiastically participated and were forced to think out of the box and this
sessions continued throughout the semester.

Activity 1

Beach Cleaning Drive Organized for TE Students

The winds were calm, the sky was serene and the waves were smooth on Sunday, the 25th of August 2019, as a total of 77 students gathered on Dadar Beach at 9 a.m. sharp. They were all dressed in black clothes as part of the dress code, and they were all TE students from VESIT. They had gone out of their way to get up early on the weekend and travel long distances for one common objective: Cleanliness.

This Beach Clean-up Drive was initiated by Dr. Pooja Kundu and Dr. Sushil Dhuldhar both Assistant Professors, in Humanities and Applied Sciences Department. They reached out to
Mr. Sreedhar, who is a VESIT alumni and a part of WeChange, a reputed NGO. Mr. Sreedhar suggested that they join hands with Jay Foundation, and thus the event came into being. The volunteers from WeChange present were Mr. Kabir Sachdev, an Ex-VESITian from Instrumentation and Ms. Khyati. The students were also joined by Mr. Jay Shrirangpure, who is the founder of Jay Foundation, a businessman and a local resident, and had personally "adopted" Dadar beach and vowed to do his best to keep it clean. He had collaborated and conducted a lot of Drives previously and had a lot of experience. The faculty which was present was Mr. Vivek Umrikar (HOD, H&S Department), Mr. Vijay Shejwalkar, Dr. Sushil Dhuldhar and Dr. Pooja Kundu.

The students were asked to divide themselves into groups of 5, given rubber gloves to wear and baskets to collect all the garbage in. They had been specially instructed to only collect plastic waste which does not decompose, and causes a lot of harm to marine life too. The students then had a great time collecting all the garbage on the beach, while
making merry and enjoying the amazing weather at the same time. The occasional short drizzles helped keep them cool. Some plastic waste was also collected from the students and faculty, for which separate arrangements were made and it was sent for recycling. “The major motive behind this drive was to make Third Year BCE students aware of the contemporary issues our society is facing today. Rather than having GDs and Debates, we believe in action and giving first-hand experience to the students, so that they will become better and more conscious citizens. It was a joint effort for saying no to plastic and encouraging proper disposal.” says Dr. Pooja Kundu.

According to the report, a total of 50 kg of garbage was collected in this Drive till 12:30PM. Soon enough, the teachers rounded up all the students and a short photo session followed,
where everyone had jubilant expressions on their faces. Everyone clapped for themselves and each other for taking part in this different, but fulfilling and satisfying event. The teachers distributed sweets to everyone, and made sure that all the students left for home. The faculty would like to thank and express their gratitude to the Principal and VicePrincipal of VESIT, for granting them permission to conduct this Drive. Heartfelt thanks to Mr. Vivek Umrikar, HOD of Humanities and Applied Sciences Department who readily agreed to join for this noble cause. Without his guidance and help it would not have been possible. Special thanks to Mr. Vijay Shejwalkar, Assistant Professor, Humanities and Applied Sciences Department for sparing his valuable time on holiday and joining for this drive. Thanks to all the diligent and sincere students who had come to make this venture huge success by cancelling their weekend plans. The aim is to keep such events regularly to give students a more hand-on approach.

Activity Two
First Years participate in Dadar Beach Clean-up

On the cool, breezy morning of Saturday, the 18th of January, around 55 first year students of VESIT, dressed in black clothes as a part of the dress code, gathered on Dadar beach at 9 a.m. sharp. These students volunteered to travel all the way to Dadar from various corners of Mumbai, early in the morning to support this initiative by the Humanities and Applied Science Department of VESIT.

This beach clean-up drive was initiated by Dr. Pooja Kundu and Dr. Sushil Duldhar. This initiative was supported by Mr. Jay Shringarpure, founder of Jay Foundation, a businessman and a local resident who has personally adopted Dadar beach and vowed to do his best to keep it clean, whom Dr. Pooja Kundu had met during her last beach cleaning drive. The faculties present for the drive were Mr. Vivek Umrikar (HOD, H&S Department), Dr. Pooja Kundu, Dr. Sushil Duldhar, Ms. Ramya T and Dr. Shashwati M.

These students were asked to divide themselves into groups, and were given rubber gloves to wear and baskets to collect the waste. They had been instructed to collect plastic waste which does not decompose and causes harm to marine life. The students had an amazing time cleaning the beach for it was not only about the inner satisfaction that they could experience but also it was a great opportunity for these students to get along with their batch mates.

“I firmly believe that real learning happens beyond the four walls of the classroom. The main motive behind this beach cleaning drive was to sensitize the young minds for non-usage of single use plastics which is choking our environment and marine life. The cherry on the cake is that the students promised that they will minimize the usage of plastic and would love to join on many such drives in future. The seed to save our incredible environment is sown and I can positively say that is going to bear fruits in future.” said Dr. Pooja Kundu.

Almost seven hundred kg of plastic waste was collected in this drive which lasted till 12 p.m. on that day. The collection of waste was followed by a photo session. The students very
enthusiastically clicked photographs to post on various social media handles. After the satisfying beach clean-up drive, the students were treated with Vada Pav by Mr. Vivek Umrikar. Immense contentment could be witnessed on everyone’s faces after constructively utilizing their holiday by doing their level best to save mother earth.
